Can A Horse Be Gelded When Out In A Field? |
Hi HorseSearchers,
I will be having my little colt gelded shortly, he doesn’t like being in the stable for long. will it be all right to turn him out after the op?
Kind Regards
Owen.
Hi Owen,
Some vets prefer a clean, unused field to do the op over a stables that may be contaminated. Many of these are the older vets, or those schooled by such.
It is important to keep him calm and happy after the op. Be sure to follow your vet’s instructions for post op!
A small clean paddock with grass is ideal to keep him moving to avoid swelling. His emotional state and immune system will be slightly compromised. Be sure, as soon as he is totally awake, to offer small amounts of water frequently for a few hours, then let him have free water.
The op should be a minor occurrence in his life. The most important thing is to keep a close eye on him for a few days. Every horse reacts differently to surgery. Ring your vet with an update either way with details. He / she will appreciate it.
Thank you for caring about your little guy. Some are treated like old school cattle; cut, turned out and left to fend for themselves.
p.s.- A few sweeties of cut up carrots and apples tossed around the paddock or in his feed tub wouldn’t hurt!
