As a horse owner you want to know the amount of nutrients your horse takes in. A well balanced diet is important to keep your horse healthy. Protein and sugar especially need attention. Our specialist diet team receives many questions about the levels of protein and sugar in feed. To give you a rough guidance we have put together some rough figures.
Horses who are grazing a lot become too fat quickly. How can you prevent that? By giving less hard feed? In that situation, what about the vitamins and minerals? One solution is to give specialist biscuits. With one biscuit a day you give your horse everything it needs without adding additional protein or sugar.
How much protein and sugar does my horse take in with different types of feed?
If say you feed your horse a biscuit instead of 1.5kg of hard feed, your horse receives 125 grams of protein and 78 grams less sugar a day. That is quite significant as it works out at around 11 percent less protein and 15 percent less sugar in your horses daily diet containing 6 kilograms of hay and 3 hours grazing.
Protein and sugar are very important in a horses diet but only within reason, like humans too much sugar or too much protein can be very bad for your horses.
